HONORS LIST
To contribute any of the honors available below, either for yourself or someone else, please contact David Rosenberg at dmr964@yahoo.com
Honors are available for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Simchat Torah.
The list below is updated regularly.
ERUV TAVSHILIN
Eruv Tavshilin is a halachic practice that allows food to be cooked on Yom Tov for use on the following Shabbat. This should be performed on Erev Rosh Hashanah, Wednesday 10/2.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Take a plate with one whole challah or matzah and either a piece of cooked fish, cooked meat, or a hard-boiled egg
2. Recite the Beracha and recital below (PDF here)
The Eruv foods may not be eaten before Shabbat. It is a good idea to wrap the matzah/challah and cooked item to separate them from other foods.
NOTE:
It is only permissible to cook from a pre-existent flame, i.e. one that was lit before Yom Tov.
MIKVAH DETAILS
There is a widespread minhag (custom) to immerse in a mikvah before Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The Mikvah at BSBI at 182 Rutledge Ave, 29403 will be open for men on Wednesday, Erev Rosh Hashanah (10/2) until 2:00 PM, and on Friday, Erev Yom Kippur (10/11) until 3:00 PM.
Recommended Donation $18. Bring your own towel. No Appointment Needed.

T'ZOM GEDALIA - FAST OF GEDALIA
On the third of Tishrei we observe a fast day commemorating the murder of Gedalia ben Achikam, governor of the Jews in the holy land after the Babylonians destroyed the first temple. His passing in year 3338 (423 BCE) led to the exile of the remaining Jews and to the subsequent death of thousands. This year, since the day after Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat, the fast is observed on Sunday.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6TH
6:05am - Fast Begins
8:00am - Selichot
8:30am - Shacharit
6:25pm - Mincha / Maariv
7:34pm - Fast Ends
KAPPAROT - כפרות
Kapparot is an important traditional ritual, which has been performed between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur throughout the Jewish world for over 1400 years.
Whilst for many this ritual consists of the use of a chicken, many others have the custom of doing this with charity money that amounts to the value of a chicken (some use multiples of 18 - Chai), which is then donated in its place with the same result achieved.
This custom should ideally be performed at home, find the instructions and text HERE
For those who won't otherwise be performing this custom, we are offering to do this on your behalf on Erev Yom Kippur, visit www.dortikvah.org/kapparot to sign up.
THE LAWS OF YOM KIPPUR
All activities that are forbidden on Shabbat are forbidden on Yom Kippur.
All adults over the age of Bar/Bat Mitzvah are also biblically obligated to abstain from the following five activities from 6:33 pm on Friday until 7:32 pm on Shabbat:
1. All eating and drinking. Those with a medical condition that could deteriorate and endanger their lives as a result of fasting are exempt from fasting on Yom Kippur. If eating or drinking is necessary, it should be done in measured amounts at specific intervals. Consult the Rabbi for detailed guidance and advice.
We offer FastAid slow-release caffeine, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen (Tylenol) tablets. The pills begin releasing after 10-12 hours and continue for 12 hours. Suggested donation $10 per dose, all proceeds benefit the Kollel of Toronto. Visit or contact the office to purchase.
2. Any washing for pleasure (we wash only until our knuckles for Netilat Yadayim), soiled hands may be rinsed in cold water
3. Wearing leather footwear
4. The application of oils and creams to the body
5. Marital relations
